“When she thinks to herself in her father’s language she knows sons and daughters don’t leave their parents house until they marry. When she thinks in English she knows she should’ve been on her own since eighteen.” — The  House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros

Call me Formatatheist.

“The Internet [isn’t] a physical world or a virtual world, but a human world. The Internet’s physical infrastructure has many centers, but from a certain vantage point there is really only one: You. Me. The lowercase i. Wherever I am, and wherever you are.” — Andrew Blum takes a journey to the center of the internet. (via explore-blog)

The Stand Umbrella is a true case of simple brilliance. No frills, no fancy tech, just ingenious functionality.  When not in use, the Stand Umbrella rests upon itself, using a tiny tip-based tripod to keep itself upright.  It doesn’t get any simpler (or smarter) than that!

“Calling “hero” everyone killed in war, no matter the circumstances of their death, not only helps sustain the ethos of martial glory that keeps young men and women signing up to kill and die for the state, no matter the justice of the cause, but also saps the word of meaning, dishonouring the men and women of exceptional courage and valour actually worthy of the title.” — Political correctness: Hero inflation (via azspot)
